On March 6th 2013 Institute of International Relations, Centre for Contemporary India Research and Studies IIR and Students’ Interest Group „India Now” organized a seminar entitled Security and Economic Development in Pakistan. The guests of the seminar were:
- prof. Krzysztof Dębnicki (Warsaw University, Collegium Civitas, former ambassador of Poland in Pakistan),
- dr. Siegfried O. Wolf (University of Heidelberg, South Asia Democratic Forum).
The topic of both presentations was the current situation in Pakistan, mainly concerning the state’s economic affairs. Speakers outlined security issues of Pakistan, emhpasizing the problem of „difficult neighborhood” of India and Afghanistan. Professor Dębnicki paid special attention to weaknesses of Pakistan’s economy and situation of the people of Pakistan – the still high percentage of illiterates, high population growth and poor schooling. The guests of the seminar agreed that unless the problems of water and energy supplies, corruption and smuggling are solved, the country will not be able to grow properly. After the presentations a discussion with the audience took place, in which, among others, a student from Pakistan took part.
