In April 22-27, 2019 the Institute of International Relations, Faculty of Political Science and International Studies of the University of Warsaw, hosted prof. Jorge A. Schiavon Uriegas from the partner university Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE), Mexico. Professor J. A. Schiavon Uriegas specializes in foreign policy of Mexico, paradiplomacy, international migration and broadly understood topics in the field of international relations (link to CV). During his stay at the Faculty of Political Sciences and International Studies, prof. Jorge A. Schiavon Uriegas participated in a series of scientific meetings.
On April 24th prof. Jorge A. Schiavon took part in a seminar entitled “Forced Migration as a Challenge for Contemporary International Relations”, during which he gave a lecture on “Migrations and Human Rights in North and Central America: A comparative and multidisciplinary analysis”. His co-speaker was dr Dorota Heidrich (IIR UW), who delivered a speech on “Main Trends in Contemporary Forced Migrations”. The meeting was moderated by Dr. Anita Oberda Monkiewicz (IIR UW).
Professor Jorge Schiavon has also participated in a meetings with dr Łukasz Zamęcki, Vice Dean for Research and International Cooperation dedicated to the potential of scientific cooperation and with researchers at the Institute of International Relations, where joint scientific projects and the exchange of academic experiences, including those related to the parametrization process were discussed.
On April 25, a seminar entitled “Between North and South: Mexico in the Western Hemisphere” was attended by prof. Jorge A. Schiavon (speech on “Containing Hegemony and Becoming Partners: Strategies from the US- Mexico Relationship”), Hector Calleros, Ph.D. from the American Studies Center of the University of Warsaw (speech on “What is the position of Mexico on Venezuela?”) and Anita Oberda Monkiewicz, Ph.D. from IIR UW (speech on “Latin America in Mexican Foreign Policy”). The seminar was moderated by dr hab. Rafał Ulatowski (IIR UW).
On April 26 prof. Jorge A. Schiavon Uriegas has met with the Rector of the University of Warsaw prof. Marcin Pałys. The meeting was also attended by: dr hab. Jakub Zajączkowski (director of the IIR UW), Alejandro Negrín Muñoz (Mexican Ambassador to Poland), Pablo Lozano, Ph.D. (Deputy Head of Mission – Embassy of Mexico in Poland), Joanna Gocłowska-Bolek, Ph.D. (Center for Political Analysis, University of Warsaw, The Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland /CRASP), dr hab. Rafał Ulatowski (IIR UW) and Anita Oberda Monkiewicz, Ph.D. (IIR UW). The meeting was devoted to the possibilities of developing scientific and research cooperation, including the idea of creating a scientific consortium associating universities from Poland and Latin America and joint projects dedicated to, among others, capacity building and summer schools as well.
At the end of his stay, prof. Jorge A. Schiavon also gave a lecture for the students of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies, Univeristy of Warsaw on „Mexican foreign policy: an Overview”.
