On November 29, 2018, as a part of the course for the Middle Eastern and African studies specialization at ISM WNPiSM UW an open lecture “70 years of the State of Israel – from Zionism to messianism” was given by a guest from Jerusalem Dr Uri Huppert.
Dr Uri Jerzy Huppert is an Israeli-Polish lawyer, political scientist, journalist, author of several books published in Polish and English. At the beginning of the 1950s, he emigrated to Israel, where he engaged in social activism, became a councilman of Jerusalem and headed the League Against Religious Coercion. For several decades he regularly visited Poland. Under the supervision of prof. Leonard Łukaszuk he wrote and defended a PhD thesis at the Faculty of Journalism and Political Sciences of the University of Warsaw. Dr Huppert is a close friend of the ISM (he was, among others, a guest of the Conference in Pieniężno in 2018). He also willingly meets with students, explaining controversies regarding Polish-Jewish and American-Jewish relations as well as Israeli politics.
The meeting, which took place on November 29, was attended by WNPiSM staff and students, students of the first and second year of Hebrew studies and Dr Angelika Adamczyk, as well as many invited guests, among others, from the Department of Africa and the Middle East of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In a 45-minute-long lecture, Dr Huppert introduced the ideas that underlie the founding of Israel, especially secular Zionism, and pointed to the changes that took place in the approach to the place and role of religion in this country and in its external relations. For over 50 minutes he was also answering questions and commentaries coming from the auditorium.
We are thankful to Dr Huppert for the meeting and we invite you to visit us on the next opportunity!
Dr Anna M. Solarz was responsible for the organization of the event.
